Silk floss tree flower, pink and yellow
This is the flower of a silk floss tree, growing next to the mall in El Cajon, San Diego County, USA. The size is about 6 in/15 cm. The link to the Wikipedia article, in this paragraph, indicates that a tree may grow to 60 m/200 feet tall, and have several hundred pods. This tree was not that large. This is also known as a silk floss tree. I'm not sure if the green objects in the upper left are young fruit, or flower buds. I suspect the former.
I had originally identified this as kapok, Ceiba pentandra, but a commenter, below, says that it's Ceiba speciosa), the silk floss tree.
God willing, I expect to post additional photos of this, or similar trees, showing other aspects of them, over the next few days.
Thanks for viewing. Larger sizes, showing more detail, are available.
064/365 silkflowerstripes
So as I went to get my broken Macbook Pro hard drive replaced (and losing all the data while doing so) I waited in the Lenox Mall in Buckhead Atlanta watching this Korean family make this temporary art exhibit called "Spring Hiatus" which is basically these rainbow stripes made of tiny pieces of silk flowers. I saw them on Friday nad they were about 1/3 done and figured if I came back Saturday to get my hard disk replaced they would be done and I'd take a picture. They were about 1/2 done today - they finish one row an hour basically. Quite a bit of work and you wouldn't know it without watching them do it. Pretty cool.
